Your Guide to Choosing An Agent You Can Trust
Navigating the world of auto insurance can feel like a complicated roadmap. Having the right auto insurance is crucial for peace of mind on the road, but just as important is having the right insurance agent by your side. They’re more than just a salesperson; they’re your advisor, your advocate, your first line of defense, and your go-to resource when you need help understanding your coverage or filing a claim.
But how do you choose the right agent amidst the many options in the Valley of the Sun? Just like finding the perfect car, it takes a little research and knowing what to look for. Here’s your guide to finding the auto insurance agent who will steer you towards the best coverage and service.

Before you even start searching, take a moment to consider your specific auto insurance needs. Ask yourself:
- Do you feel like you have a strong understanding of what is covered on your auto policy? If you don’t, that’s okay! If you ask your prospective agent/current agent for information on how auto insurance works they should have plenty of informational guides for you/should be happy to answer all of your questions. At J Martin Insurance Agency, we have a “knowing your insurance” guide that we send out with all policies.
- Do I feel comfortable with the coverage limits I have on my current auto policy? When is the last time you have your policy reviewed? Your life is always changing, the same is true with your insurance needs. When purchasing a policy, your new agent should take the time to review your current coverages and ensure that your coverages fits your needs.
- Would you consider bundling your auto/home insurance? Bundling your policies has many benefits. Not only do you get a bundling discount applied to each policy, you get the experience the ease of having all your policies in one agency.
- Do you know what type of coverage you are looking for? Do you know if you want to have towing and roadside covered on all of your vehicles, just some, or not at all? There are plenty of optional coverages to choose from.
Having a clear understanding of your needs will help you find an agent who specializes in the areas relevant to you.

One of the best ways to find a reliable agent is through word-of-mouth. Ask your trusted network:
- Friends & Family: Who do they trust for their auto insurance? Your friends and family will probably be honest with you if they are happy with their agent.
- Colleagues: Do your co-workers have any recommendations for an agent that they have had a positive experience with?
- Realtors or Mortgage Brokers: As an insurance agent, I am always in contact with mortgage brokers and
Personal recommendations can provide valuable insights into an agent’s service and reliability.
If you contact an insurance agent that was recommended, make sure you mention that they were recommended and who recommended them. Most insurance agents will want to send a special thank you to the person that recommended you!

The internet is a powerful tool for research. Look for:
- Check for Licensing and Credentials: Verify that you are working with a agent that is licensed for the state you reside in. You can search the NAIC data base by clicking here.
- Online Reviews: Check platforms like Google and the Better Business Bureau for local insurance agents. Pay attention to the overall rating and read detailed reviews to understand other clients’ experiences. Really read the reviews, how did the agent respond to negative reviews?
- Agency Website: Many agencies have websites that provide information about their services, the insurance companies they represent, and their team of agents.
- Agency Social Media: If you are not able to get much info off of the agent’s website it may be due to their contract with a insurance company (i.e. they don’t have full control of the website). Check their social media, do they have relevant information posted? Do they seem responsive to interactions?

Once you have a few potential candidates, don’t hesitate to schedule consultations. This is your opportunity to:
- Discuss your specific needs in detail.
- Ask questions about coverage options and recommendations.
- Get quotes for the coverage you’re interested in.
- Assess their communication style and responsiveness.
A good agent will take the time to listen to you and explain things clearly. It doesn’t matter if you are looking to purchase a small auto policy or if you are looking to purchase multiple policies, a good agent will take the time to ensure your insurance needs are being met and that you are properly insured.

During your consultations, be sure to ask key questions like:
- What insurance companies do you represent? (Especially important for independent agents)
- What types of coverage do you recommend for my situation and why?
- What are the coverage limits and deductibles?
- Are there any discounts I might be eligible for?
- What is the process for filing a claim?
- How often should I review my policy?
- What is your agency’s policy review policies?
- What is your preferred method of communication?
If you think of a question after your consolation is finished, don’t be afraid to reach out and asked the insurance agent any questions you may have. It’s important that they take the time to answer all of your questions during and/or after your appointment.

When getting an auto insurance quote you will need to provide some information. Having that information readily available will make the process smoother and will help ensure you get the most accurate estimate. You should have the following information prepared:
The Primary & Secondary Insured’s Information
You and your spouse will be the primary and secondary insureds

- Date of Birth
- Driver’s License Number & State Issued
- If you need an SR-22
- Marital Status
- Gender
- Occupation
Household Driver’s Information
- First & Last Name

- Current Full-Term Premium

Vehicle’s Information
- Year/Make/Model/VIN

Coverages Preferences
- Desired Coverage Types (If you know you want specific coverages you are interested in i.e. comprehensive, collision, towing & roadside, etc. be ready to specify)
- Desired Coverage Limits (if you have an idea of the liability limits you’re comfortable with i.e. $100,000/$300,000 bodily injury)
- Desired Deductible Amounts (if you know what deductibles you would prefer i.e. comprehensive and/or collision. Remember that a higher deductible usually means a lower premium)
Providing accurate and complete information from the start will help the insurance agent or online system generate a more precise quote. Inaccurate information can lead to a quote that changes significantly once your details are verified, potentially causing frustration. Being prepared will save you time and ensure you’re comparing accurate quotes.

After you’ve spoken with your top auto insurance agent choices, it’s time to compare them and your overall experience. Here’s a structured way to evaluate them:
Compare the Quotes
- Price: Note the total premium for each quote. However, don’t make this your sole deciding factor. You might regret going with the cheapest insurance policy later on (I’ve found in life if something is much cheaper than everyone else – it’s for a reason)
- Coverage Limits: Carefully compare the limits for each coverage type (Bodily Injury Liability, Property Damage Liability, Comprehensive, Collision, UM/UIM, MedPay, etc.). Are they offering the same levels of protection?
- Deductibles: Compare the deductible amounts for Comprehensive and Collision. Remember the trade-off between higher deductibles and lower premiums.
- Included Coverages: Note any differences in included optional coverages like Rental Reimbursement or Roadside Assistance.
- Discounts Applied: See which discounts each agent was able to identify and apply (e.g., multi-car, good driver, safety features).
- Clarity of the Quote: Was the quote easy to understand? Did the agent clearly explain the different coverages and their implications?
Evaluate the Agent’s Knowledge and Expertise
- Understanding of Your Needs: Did the agent take the time to understand your specific situation, driving habits, and concerns? Did they ask insightful questions?
- Explanation of Coverage: How well did they explain the different types of coverage and why they might be important for you in Arizona? Did they clarify any confusing terms?
- Recommendations: Were their recommendations tailored to your needs, or did they push for the highest coverage regardless? Did they explain the rationale behind their suggestions?
- Knowledge of Arizona-Specific Issues: Did they demonstrate an understanding of local factors relevant to auto insurance in Arizona (i.e. monsoon season, uninsured driver statistics)?
Assess the Agent’s Communication and Professionalism
- Responsiveness: How quickly did they respond to your initial inquiry and follow-up questions?
- Communication Style: Were they clear, concise, and easy to understand? Did they communicate in a way that made you feel comfortable?
- Friendliness and Approachability: Did you feel at ease talking to them? Did they seem genuinely interested in helping you?
- Professionalism: Were they punctual for appointments (if in-person), well-prepared, and organized?
- Listening Skills: Did they actively listen to your concerns and address them adequately?
Trust Your Gut Feeling

You might find an agent with impressive credentials and glowing online reviews. However, during your interactions, pay attention to those subtle cues and feelings that arise. Your instincts are often based on non-verbal communication, tone of voice, and overall demeanor – factors that can reveal a lot about a person’s character and how they might handle your insurance needs.
After speaking with an agent (or a few) consider the following:
- Communication Style: Do you feel comfortable talking to them? Do they explain things clearly and patiently, without using excessive jargon? Or do you feel rushed, confused, or even condescended to? Clear and open communication is vital for a successful agent-client relationship. Your gut will often tell you if their communication style resonates with you.
- Listening Skills: Do they truly listen to your needs and concerns? Or do they seem more focused on pushing a particular policy? A good agent will prioritize understanding your individual situation and tailoring recommendations accordingly. If you feel unheard, your instincts are likely picking up on that lack of genuine interest.
- Trustworthiness and Transparency: Do you feel like you can trust their advice? Are they upfront and honest about coverage options, limitations, and potential costs? Or do you sense a lack of transparency or feel like they’re not being entirely forthcoming? Trust is the bedrock of any financial relationship, and your gut is often a reliable indicator of someone’s integrity.
- Responsiveness and Follow-Through: How responsive are they to your inquiries? Do they follow up on their promises? Even during the initial stages of getting a quote, pay attention to how promptly and reliably they communicate. This can be a strong indicator of their future service. A nagging feeling of unreliability shouldn’t be ignored.
- Overall Comfort Level: Ultimately, do you feel at ease interacting with this person? Do you sense a genuine desire to help you, or do they seem solely focused on making a sale? Your comfort level plays a significant role in building a positive and long-lasting relationship. If something just feels “off,” it’s worth exploring other options.
Your intuition can serve as a valuable filter, helping you narrow down your choices to agents who not only meet your practical requirements but also make you feel confident and secure.
Don’t dismiss that inner voice. If an agent makes you feel uneasy, pressured, or misunderstood, it’s a strong signal to explore other options. In the long run, choosing an auto insurance agent you trust and feel comfortable with will lead to a more positive and stress-free experience on the roads.
By systematically comparing these factors, you can move beyond just the price and make a well-informed decision about which auto insurance agent in Arizona is the best fit for your needs and will provide you with the best service down the road. Remember that the cheapest option isn’t always the best value. Consider the complete package of coverage, service, and your personal connection with the agent.
